What happens

Sodium hypochlorite reacts with ammonia to form chloramine vapors. Inhalation causes pulmonary edema at low ppm. Domestic exposure from mixing cleaners sends thousands to emergency rooms every year in the US alone.

Reaction products

  • Chloramine (NH2Cl, NHCl2)
  • Hydrazine (trace)

If contact happens

Do not mix. If accidentally combined, evacuate the room, open windows, do not return for at least 30 minutes.

Note: CDC MMWR reports repeated household poisonings from bleach and ammonia based cleaners.
