Educational summary of documented chemical interactions. Do NOT attempt any of these mixtures. If an accidental mix occurs, evacuate, ventilate, and call emergency services. Terms of use.
Chemical mixture
Can you mix Bleach (sodium hypochlorite) and Vinegar (acetic acid)?
☠Deadly. Do not mix.. Releases chlorine gas.
oxidizer
Bleach (sodium hypochlorite)
CAS 7681-52-9
What happens
Acetic acid protonates hypochlorite, releasing molecular chlorine. Even dilute household products generate concentrations above IDLH within seconds in a small room.
Reaction products
- Chlorine (Cl2)
- Sodium acetate
If contact happens
Never combine acidic cleaners with bleach. Ventilate and evacuate if it happens.
