Educational summary of documented chemical interactions. Do NOT attempt any of these mixtures. If an accidental mix occurs, evacuate, ventilate, and call emergency services. Terms of use.
Chemical mixture
Can you mix Hydrochloric acid and Sodium hydroxide?
!Caution required. Neutralization, strongly exothermic.
What happens
Standard acid base neutralization. Heat release can boil the solution and splash caustic droplets if concentrated reagents are mixed quickly.
Reaction products
- Sodium chloride
- Water
If contact happens
Add acid to water first, then slowly add base while stirring. Wear splash goggles and nitrile gloves.
