Educational summary of documented chemical interactions. Do NOT attempt any of these mixtures. If an accidental mix occurs, evacuate, ventilate, and call emergency services. Terms of use.
Chemical mixture
Can you mix Formaldehyde and Hydrochloric acid?
⚠Dangerous. Can form bis(chloromethyl) ether, a strong carcinogen.
What happens
Trace formation of BCME occurs when formaldehyde and HCl coexist as vapors. OSHA classifies BCME as a known human carcinogen with no safe exposure.
Reaction products
- Bis(chloromethyl) ether (BCME)
If contact happens
Segregate. Vent formaldehyde separately from acid vapors.
