Chemical mixture
Can you mix Glycerol and Potassium permanganate?
⚠Dangerous. Ignites spontaneously after a short delay.
oxidizer
Potassium permanganate
CAS 7722-64-7
What happens
Solid KMnO4 in contact with glycerol undergoes an exothermic oxidation that self ignites within seconds. Classic demonstration reaction, real hazard if it happens by accident.
Reaction products
- Carbon dioxide
- Water
- Manganese oxides
If contact happens
Never store an oxidizer next to a polyol. Segregate by hazard class.
