Chemical mixture
Can you mix Sulfuric acid and Potassium permanganate?
⚠Dangerous. Forms Mn2O7, shock and heat sensitive explosive.
oxidizer
Potassium permanganate
CAS 7722-64-7
What happens
Concentrated sulfuric acid dehydrates permanganate to Mn2O7, an oily green liquid that detonates above 55 C or on contact with organics.
Reaction products
- Manganese heptoxide (Mn2O7)
If contact happens
Never combine concentrated H2SO4 with solid KMnO4. Use dilute solutions in tiny quantities behind a blast shield.
